YBA Grantwriting Intern / Pro Sports
The Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy is a year-round educational and athletic facility with the mission to use baseball and softball as vehicles to foster positive character development, academic achievement, and improved health among underserved youth from Washington, D.C. Founded in 2013, the Academy is poised for exciting growth and utilization of its 9-acre facility in Ft. Dupont Park in Southeast, D.C.
Reporting to the Program Manager -- Reporting and Evaluation, the YBA Grantwriting Intern will work as part of the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy team in support of the development departmentís foundation and government fundraising efforts. This role will gain relevant experience in foundation research, opportunity identification, and proposal development, and will build a valuable portfolio of work.
The YBA Grantwriting Intern may endure some travel and is expected to work flexibly, spending most of his/her time at the Academy facility, occasionally coordinating with front office staff at Nationals Park. The individual in this role may be required to interface with Academy Board Members, major donors, and VIPs, such as Nationals players, MLB or government officials.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Grant & Foundation Relations (100%)
-Work collaboratively with internal team and expert consultants to identify viable sources of public and private grant funding
-Create grant proposals to obtain funds to sustain/advance current programming, and/or support special projects
-Track proposal progress; provide regular updates to the Development Team
-Assist in the preparation and/or monitoring of grant budgets
-Maintain accurate records for each grant awarded in database, in network, and on paper (as needed)
-Compile and submit pertinent data and compliance documentation as required
This position requires a self-motivated person with personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a commitment to and passion for the Academyís mission. Additionally:
-Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a four-year accredited college
-Demonstrated effective communication skills; the ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines
-Strong project management skills managing complex, multifaceted projects resulting in measurable successes
-Ability to appropriately work with and around confidential information is necessary
-Ability to work independently or as part of a team and ability to take direction is a must
-Basic knowledge of baseball/softball rules preferred
-Emotional commitment to working with youth and families in a low-income, urban community
-Commitment to achieving the articulated objectives of the Academy for Scholar-Athletes, staff, and the community at-large
-Ensures achievement of Academy goals, vision and mission
-Supports and upholds Academy core values
-Assists with other fundraising events/projects as requested
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities necessary to perform essential functions
-Strong organizational and planning skills. Ability to track and meet deadlines, combined with flexibility to meet ad-hoc requests or respond to immediate opportunities when they arise
-Excellent organizational and communication (verbal and written) skills
-Experience researching, mining, creating, eliciting, analyzing, and summarizing information from a variety of sources.
-Experience with Customer Relationship Management software a plus
-A team player, used to working collaboratively in a sometimes hectic and fast-paced, but fun environment.
-Experience coaching, playing and/or enjoying youth baseball / softball a plus.
